This competition concept celebrates the heroism and determination of the people of Chi Chi and Taiwan following the 921 earthquake, and provides a space to heal the wounds of destruction and loss of lives. The concept of the project is derived from the physical and emotional “ripples” which featured at the heart of this event and its aftermath.
The main spaces of this project are the Memorial Halls and the Memorial Walls. The Memorial Halls — those of Destruction, Reconstruction, History, Seismology, and Remembrance — as well as a number of platforms above the water surface, provide a variety of spaces for different commemorative activities. They also form focal points for people to gather around, to speak about, to remember, and more importantly, to look beyond the 921 earthquake.
